Bouncing back against the East leaders
Montreal’s busy stretch continues Sunday with its third game in eight days, as it gets set to take on the New England Revolution at 6pm at Gillette Stadium (TVA Sports, TSN, 91.9 Sports, TSN 690).
Montreal was unbeaten through six games – tying a Club record – before falling 1-0 to New York City FC last Wednesday. Head coach Wilfried Nancy’s men had won their three previous games before the loss and will look to bounce back against the Revs when they take them on for the first time this season.
“It’s clear that we have a certain style of play, and it isn’t on us to change how we play due to the opposition,” said goalkeeper James Pantemis. “We are confident in each other. It’s something the coach put in place in the beginning of the season. We know they’re a good team, but on our end, we’re determined to show that we’re not near the top of the standings by fluke.”
The New England Revolution is currently first in the Eastern Conference and is coming off a dominant 5-0 win against Inter Miami CF on Wednesday. The Boston representatives have won their last two games, both by clean sheet.
Bruce Arena’s men lead the league in scoring, mostly thanks to their offensive trio of Designated Players comprised of Gustavo Bou and Adam Buksa – who lead the squad with seven goals apiece – and Carles Gil, who leads the league with 12 assists this season. He’s on track to break the assists record in a single season in MLS if he keeps this up.
“These are three good players, and we know what their qualities are,” said head coach Wilfried Nancy. “These are players with different profiles. I’m excited to face them because we like to play the most talented players. I respect this team and I respect their coach. We’ll be ready to face these types of players and this type of opposition. Our game plan is to cause them problems.”
Montreal will still be without defender Kamal Miller, midfielder Samuel Piette, and forward Romell Quioto, who are all representing their respective countries at the Gold Cup. Both Honduras and Canada advanced to the quarterfinal round and will play their games this weekend.
After the New England Revolution, Montreal will be back on the road the following Saturday, July 31, to take on Inter Miami CF for a third time this season (TVA Sports, TSN, 91.9 Sports, TSN 690).
