Pregame – Chicago Fire v CF Montréal

Montreal looking for fourth straight win on the road

CF Montréal will be on the road this Saturday to take on the Chicago Fire for the first time this year, with kick off set at 8pm EST in the Windy City (TVA Sports, 91,9 Sports, TSN 690).

It’s the first of two games between the two sides before the end of the 2022 MLS regular-season, with the Fire paying Montreal a visit on September 13.

With just eight games to go in the 2022 MLS regular-season, head coach Wilfried Nancy’s men are in a good place at the moment. Currently ranked second in the Eastern Conference with first within their sights, CF Montréal is also riding a seven-game unbeaten streak, which includes three consecutive wins on the road.

They will look to go for a fourth this Saturday when they take on the Chicago side.

“We’re getting close to the end of the season now,” said defender Alistair Johnston. “We like where we are in the table, but we’re still looking up. There are still points to be won. We’re excited by that and it’s definitely a motivating factor.”

Chicago, on its end, is currently outside the playoff picture as the season winds down, looking to claw their way into the top seven teams that qualify to the postseason tournament in the Eastern Conference. The Illinois representatives are coming off two straight losses to New York City FC and the Philadelphia Union, although they had won three of their four games before that stretch.

Despite key offensive additions during the offseason, most notably Swiss striker Xherdan Shaqiri, the main problem this season for head coach Ezra Hendrickson’s men is a lack of goalscoring. Chicago is dead last in scoring leaguewide with just 28 goals after 26 games.

On Montreal’s end, goals have come in abundance as of late, with striker Romell Quioto leading the way, scoring 11 goals in his last 10 starts, and five goals in his last three starts.

“We just need to keep going. What we’ve been doing has been working,” said centre-back Joel Waterman. “We’re unbeaten in seven games and we’re equally good on the road. It’s about being as consistent as we can and picking up points any way we can.”

After missing last Saturday’s 4-0 win over the New England Revolution to confirm his transfer to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, Djordje Mihailovic is back with the squad and will be available for Saturday’s game against his former Club.

CF Montréal will be back at Stade Saputo to take on the New York Red Bulls, on Wednesday, August 31. Kick off at 7:30pm. Get your tickets on cfmontreal.com.
