While Montreal celebrated the first anniversary of Cameron Porter’s best soccer moment yet, the player was champing at the bit – again.
Having suffered a minor hamstring injury earlier this month, Porter is still limited to training on the sidelines after missing the entire 2015 season, five CONCACAF Champions League and MLS games aside.
“This injury was a bit of a setback, coming off of that one,” Porter said after Thursday’s training session. “But honestly, if it’s the only setback that I have, then I can only be happy about it. It’s really not too much. I’ve learned a lot about patience over the last year.”
But the tempo of those solo training sessions is picking up. Actual competition on the field doesn’t seem so distant now. Porter’s morale stays high, and he says he’s getting closer to returning to the pitch.
“I’ve been running a lot,” Porter said. “It’s good. I’ve got a new, softer knee brace that gives me more freedom of movement. It’s all going well.”
Porter, who remains under the watchful eye of the Impact medical staff, understandably doesn’t want to get ahead of himself. Not after the struggles of last season.
“I got a text from my grandma recently, after I got this little knock, and she said, ‘I told myself that, by 80 years old, I’d have learned to be patient, but I’m still working on it. It’s nice to see that you’re finally figuring it out.’ It’s one step at a time.”
