Despite winning its first game this past Saturday by a 3-1 score, Mexico’s Pachuca has had a tough start to its season.
Six games into the Clausura, the Impact’s Champions League quarterfinal opponents are just 2-3-1 this season – good for 7 points and 13th in the Primera division standings – while having scored only six times in 2015, three of which came in last weekend’s game versus Atlas.
Head coach Frank Klopas and assistant Enzo Concina travelled to Mexico City a few days before the team arrived in Mexico, sitting in the stands for the 1-1 draw between Pachuca and fellow Liga MX side Toluca on February 7.
Pachuca, who is currently near the relegation zone, has also lost its prized offseason acquisition in Dario Cvitanich, a 30-year-old Argentine striker who played in Ligue 1 with Nice for the past three seasons. He suffered a knee injury that will keep him out of action for somewhere near six weeks, but is recently back to training with the team.
Prior to this weekend’s win, rumours circulated in Mexico that Pachuca manager Diego Alonzo may be axed if things don’t turn around for his club soon.
In addition, the two games versus the Impact come during a sequence of four games in just 11 days, (Feb. 21 vs Leon, Feb. 24 vs IMFC, Feb. 27 in Tijuana and Mar. 3 in Montreal).
However, it’s not easy to win in Mexico. Read: http://bit.ly/1CbFVJC
