Improbable Bush save drives Impact to Chicago win

There are plenty of reasons to go to Stade Saputo. The atmosphere. The offensive feats of Drogba, Piatti and the likes. Laurent Ciman’s elegant tackling.

All too often forgotten are Evan Bush’s masterstrokes in front of the Montreal net.

This past Saturday, Bush yet again pulled off a wonderful and improbable save, stopping Chicago Fire’s Alex Morrell. A Matt Polster run down the left produced a cutback that Morrell fiercely redirected toward the far right corner for a sure goal.

But Bush saw what was going on. After cutting angles for Polster, the Montreal ‘keeper hurried back to position, between the middle of his net and the far post. He was thus able to gain a firm footing and dive to his left, beating Morrell’s shot away for a corner kick.

“You have to make saves, especially on the road, whether he hit it at me or he hit it away from me where I had to go get it,” Bush said postgame. “I just tried to give myself the best opportunity. I think the team builds off of saves like that. They get confidence. It gives them extra life leading into the end of the game, and it showed because we pressed on the game and we got the result.”

The Impact did get the result, leaving Toyota Park with a 2-1 win courtesy of Nacho Piatti’s jaw-dropping stoppage-time winner.

“It feels fantastic,” Bush said. “We’re at two and two on the road this year. It’s something that we’re trying to take pride in, this year, getting results on the road. In these circumstances, being down a goal, had we walked out with a point, we probably would have been fairly satisfied. But to get the three points on a great goal, we’re ecstatic about it.”
