Didier Drogba wanted to trouble his former Chelsea teammate, goalkeeper Petr Čech, at the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Game against English club arsenal. That’s exactly what he did on Thursday night, scoring the lone MLS All-Stars goal in a 2-1 loss.

Drogba, who took part in the game along with his club teammates Nacho Piatti and Laurent Ciman, scored in first-half stoppage-time after a Čech save and a Rob Holding block. But third time was a charm.

“Alas, we lost, but this was a good experience,” Drogba told Impact Media after the game. “I played with many great players such as Kaká, Sebastian Giovinco, Andrea Pirlo, Piatti, Ciman. … Montreal was well-represented.”

Drogba was a starter at San Jose’s Avaya Stadium, as was Laurent Ciman, who played alongside another former Standard de Liège player, LA Galaxy’s Jelle Van Damme. On his first night back from injury, Ciman gave a fine 45 minutes to head coach Dominic Kinnear.

“This was a superb experience, very enjoyable,” Ciman told Impact Media. “I spent time with my buddy Jelle, who I had not seen in a while. We represented the Impact well with Nacho and Didier, who scored against Arsenal again.”

Nacho Piatti, for his part, came on as a 33rd-minute sub for David Villa – who had said earlier this week that he wanted to play with Piatti. For 40 minutes, Piatti played some fine passes – notably to Toronto rival Sebastian Giovinco in the second half – and tried to unsettle opponents down the left, as he usually does.

“I’m really pleased to have played with the great players of this league,” Piatti told Impact Media. “It’s already a pleasure to play with Didier and Laurent in Montreal. Playing with Kaká and Pirlo was wonderful.”
