MONTREAL – CF Montréal defender Róbert Thorkelsson has been called up to Iceland's U21 team ahead of an international friendly against Ireland (U21), scheduled for this Sunday, March 26, at Turners Cross Stadium, in Cork, Ireland.
The defender will join his national team Thursday and return to Montreal next Monday.
Thorkelsson has 12 caps with the Icelandic U21 national team, having made his debut on September 4, 2020, in a U21 European Championship qualifying match against Sweden. In 2022, he also earned his first minutes with Iceland's senior squad playing four international friendlies against Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Estonia and Sweden.
He logged his first MLS minutes with CF Montréal in 2023 last Saturday at Olympic Stadium, coming on as an 80th-minute substitute in the 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Union.
