The Montreal Impact announced on Wednesday that Québécois and Canadian international midfielder Samuel Piette has signed a new three-year contract with the club. The agreement comes with an option for the 2023 season.

“We are very happy, as he is, to have found an agreement that shows mutual respect, as there was interest from both sides to reach this conclusion,” declared Impact sporting director Olivier Renard. “We wanted Samuel to stay with the club and I want to thank him to have trust in our project. He will be able to continue his contribution on and off the field.”

Piette, 25, has played his last three seasons with the Impact in MLS, totalling 6,180 minutes in 70 regular season games, all starts, while adding four assists. On May 18, 2019, Piette ended a 51 regular season game streak (3 in 2017, 34 in 2018 and 14 in 2019), surpassing Patrice Bernier’s previous club record of 45 set in 2013. He helped the Impact win its fourth Canadian Championship last September 25 at BMO Field, in Toronto, after starting four games during the tournament.

In 2018, he became the first Impact player, excluding goalkeepers, in MLS and the third player in club history, in the first and second divisions, after Paul Dougherty (1995) and Mauro Biello (2000), to start every regular season game, and the first Impact player to appear in every MLS game during the season.

Before joining the Impact, Piette played a total of 46 games in Spain’s third division between 2015 and 2017, including 32 with CD Izarra in 2016-17. He joined Deportivo La Coruña in 2014 and spent a year on loan with Racing de Ferrol in the 2015-16 season. He previously played in Germany, in 2013 and 2014, with Fortuna Düsseldorf, appearing in two 2. Bundesliga games, as well as in 31 games with the youth team.

Originally from Repentigny, Piette played his youth soccer in Québec with FC Boisbriand, before joining FC Metz, in France, from 2009 to 2012, following a partnership with the Quebec Soccer Federation.

Piette has been greatly involved in the club’s community initiatives since joining the Impact, particularly with its school visits program “All the way with the Impact”.

At the international level, Piette has recorded four assists in 46 games, including 32 starts, with the Canadian national team. He made his senior debut with the Reds at the age of 17, on June 3, 2012, against the United States. He has appeared in the last four Concacaf Gold Cup tournaments, in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, while also appearing in several 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He also represented Canada at the U17, U20 and U23 levels and played in the 2011 FIFA U17 World Cup in Mexico.
