He will take part in the Africa U23 Cup of Nations
MONTREAL – Midfielder Orji Okwonkwo has been selected by the Nigeria U23 national team to take part in the 2019 Africa U23 Cup of Nations, which will take place in Egypt from November 8 to 22.
Okwonkwo, 21, was named the Impact Most Valuable Player in 2019 after finishing the season with eight goals, all in the run of play, and two assists in 28 regular season games, including 24 starts, and 1,784 minutes.
At the international level, he won the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2015, in Chile, with the Nigeria U17 team, appearing in five games throughout the tournament. He scored a goal in a 4-2 win against Mexico in the semifinals.
Nigeria is part of Group B and will face Ivory Coast, South Africa and Zambia in the group stage. At the end of the tournament, both finalists and the third-place winner will qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Tokyo, Japan.
