MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced on Monday the nomination of Uruguayan Esteban Gesto as assistant coach with the first team.

“Esteban Gesto is one of the most well known fitness coaches in all of Latin America,” said Montreal Impact head coach Wilmer Cabrera. “Regardless of all the experience he has, he’s always been on top of the fitness aspect of the game, evolving with the tendencies. He coached top players in top clubs and selections at the highest level in the world. His knowledge and experience will be helpful for the last push of the season, mostly as an advisor to put the players in the best conditions possible.”

Gesto has built and maintained an impressive reputation throughout South America and around the world with more than 40 years of experience as a coach and fitness coach at the professional, and at the international level, with the Uruguayan senior and youth national teams, in addition to working with clubs in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Peru and at home in Uruguay.

He was part of the Uruguay national team coaching staff in two FIFA World Cups, in 1990 and 2002, and in two FIFA U20 World Cups, and won several competitions, including the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup with Club Nacional in 1980.

Originally from Santa Lucia and nicknamed “El Profesor” in his country, he was also a teacher at the Comisión Nacional de Educación Física, in sporting centres and schools, and practiced medicine.

Jules Gueguen, the Montreal Impact Academy fitness coach, will stay with the first team until the end of the season.
