Djordje Mihailovic called up by the United States national team

MONTREAL – Midfielder Djordje Mihailovic was selected Thursday by the United States national team to participate in a preparation camp from January 7 to 21, in Phoenix, Arizona.

The camp will serve both as a preliminary preparation and final roster selection ahead of the team’s upcoming three Concacaf qualifying matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The United States will first face El Salvador on January 27 at Lower.com Field, in Columbus, before travelling north of the border to take on Canada in Hamilton at Tim Hortons Field on January 30. The squad concludes the international window against Honduras on February 2 at Allianz Field in Minnesota.

Mihailovic, 23, makes his return to a U.S. men’s national team camp for the first time since January 2021. He earned his first of six senior caps on January 27, 2019 against Panama, opening the score for his side in a 3-0 victory.

Mihailovic enjoyed a career-best MLS season in 2021, establishing himself as CF Montréal’s creative centrepiece, tallying 16 assists, two short of MLS assist leader Carles Gil (18) of the New England Revolution. In doing so, Mihailovic surpassed the record of 13 assists previously held by Nacho Piatti in 2018. With his 16 assists, Mihailovic already sits sixth all-time among the Club’s best passers in MLS. The 23-year-old American also became the second player in Club history to play all MLS games last season (34). In 32 starts, he led the team with 2,805 minutes played. He also collected four goals and took 118 corners, setting another MLS Club record.

Mihailovic was also the recipient of the Giuseppe-Saputo Trophy, awarded to the Club’s Most Valuable Player in 2021.

The team’s roster for the World Cup Qualifying camp will be finalized at the end of this training camp.
