CF Montréal exercises permanent transfer option for Joaquin Torres

MONTREAL – CF Montréal announced Thursday the decision to exercise the permanent transfer option for midfielder Joaquín Torres. On loan this season from Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys, Torres signed a two-year deal with the Montreal side, which extends the player’s contract through 2023 with two option years in 2024 and 2025.

“We are pleased with Joaquín’s transfer to the Club,” said CF Montréal Sporting Director Olivier Renard. “Like Ahmed (Hamdi), Joaquín has adapted well since his arrival last winter. We are happy with what he has done so far this season and we are confident for the future. He is a player who is motivated to be in Montreal and he feels good at the Club.”

In his first season in MLS the 24-year-old played 24 matches, including 18 starts, and logged 1,539 minutes of playing time. Ranked third in the team with 33 shots, the Neuquén native has tallied four goals and five assists this season, including the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win on August 27 against Toronto FC at Stade Saputo.

Prior to joining CF Montréal on loan last February, Torres played with Newell’s Old Boys, his boyhood club based in Rosario where he made his debut at the age of 12. He joined the first team in 2015, notably scoring twice in 27 matches during the 2017-2018 season. Torres subsequently spent the 2019-2020 season on loan with Greek first division side Volos FC where he collected five goals in 24 games, including 15 starts and earned 1573 minutes of playing time.
