MONTREAL – CF Montréal announced Wednesday the acquisition of defender Aaron Herrera from Real Salt Lake in return for $350,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money, $150,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money, the Club’s natural first round pick (No. 25 overall) in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft and a 2023 international roster spot. Real Salt Lake may also retain a percentage of a future transfer fee for Herrera, should his fee meet a certain threshold.

“We are very pleased with Aaron’s arrival at the Club. He is a player who will contribute with his quality on the field, but also with his experience in the league. He can play a variety of positions, both as a central defender in a three-man backline, and on the flanks, on the right and on the left,” said CF Montréal Vice-President and Chief Sporting Officer Olivier Renard. “We had contacted Real Salt Lake in the past to acquire him, but without success. We are very happy that this transaction is now taking place.”

Herrera, 25, played in 27 games with Salt Lake in 2022, including 25 as a starter, collecting three assists in 2,267 minutes played. The defender signed his first professional contract with Salt Lake in 2017 as a Homegrown Player. Since then, he has played a total of 124 games, including 119 starts, and 10,581 minutes of play, tallying one goal and 19 assists in MLS with the Western Conference side. He also played eight playoff games in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
