Nigerian’s volley proves to be game winner
If you haven’t already seen it, take a look at Orji Okwonkwo’s game-winning goal against the Portland Timbers on Wednesday night.
It was a moment of brilliance from the Nigerian midfielder, who had also opened the scoring in the first half. It had Stade Saputo shaking its head in disbelief, including some of the players on the pitch.
“It was a superb goal,” said midfielder Saphir Taïder. “There’s nothing to say, just watch and enjoy. Everyone appreciates a goal like that. I was so happy I pulled him to the ground. I’m happy for him. He made the team win and he deserves it.”
“Fantastic goal. Amazing,” said midfielder Ken Krolicki. “It was one of those moments we needed. We created a lot of chances throughout the game, but we couldn’t capitalize. I think our second goal needed to come like that. It took some magic from him, and it was great.”
Even midfielder Samuel Piette, currently with the Canadian men’s national team for the Concacaf Gold Cup, shared his reaction to the stunner.
“It was risky, it was talent, it’s the type of shot forwards need to try sometimes,” added Garde. “We won off that goal, and it was the most difficult one to score tonight. There were easier ones. That’s football.”
