Following the Impact’s elimination from the MLS playoffs, rumours began swirling around social media that defender Alessandro Nesta would be the next head coach of the Montreal Impact.
However, Impact president Joey Saputo put those rumours to bed during the team’s post-mortem Tuesday afternoon.
“We’ve never had a discussion with Alessandro about coaching this team,” said Joey Saputo. “I think he still has to get his coaching licences. I don’t think he even wants to jump directly from being a player to a coach so quickly, so for us, we have no idea how these rumours got started.”
Sporting director Nick De Santis added that Nesta will end up being a good coach one day, but when he’s going to do it, he’s going to do it right.
“If Alessandro makes a decision to go into coaching, he’s going to do everything he can to be successful and will be committed 100%,” said De Santis. “He’s going to take his time and make sure that he’s prepared on every level. He will not rush into it.”
