Need to know: Romario Williams

Romario Top5

The Montreal Impact used its first pick overall to select Jamaican forward Romario Williams. The striker from the University of Central Florida showed well in the Combine and impressed the Impact brass with a good mix of speed and skill.

Here are five things you should know about the bleu-blanc-noir’s newest player:

5 – The former Jamaican youth international was invited to take part in the senior team’s camp when he was just 16 years old, after a solid showing at the 2011 U17 FIFA World Cup.

4 - He spent this past summer training with former Impact defender Shavar Thomas - who spoke highly of his time in Montreal - in preparation for his final campaign at the University level.

3 – Yes, he’s named after THAT Romario. A huge soccer fan, Williams’ father named his baby boy after Brazilian superstar and World Cup winner Romario - his favourite player – who happened to face off against the Impact in 2006 while playing for Miami FC, where he scored 19 goals in 26 games played at 40 years of age.

2 – He speaks French! Williams spent four years in high school learning the language of love in his native Jamaica no-less!

1 – He scores goals! In his last two seasons for UCF, the true number 9 scored 17 goals in 34 games played.
