Marco Schällibaum: "We saw Bernardello's quality right away"

Hernan Bernardello Champions League vs san jose earthquakes

Head coach Marco Schällibaum, goalkeeper Evan Bush and midfielder Patrice Bernier share their thoughts on Wednesday's game against the Earthquakes and on Hernan Bernardello's winning debut.

Marco Schällibaum
On his starting lineup…

We don’t have a team A or Team B. We saw today Collen Warner have a very good game, and Evan Bush in goal, he stopped a penalty shot. We have always said we have depth and we always field a Team A. We played a good game defensively today.

On Bernardello…

We saw his quality right away. He takes good corners and free-kicks, and that becomes an extra weapon in our arsenal. Thankfully, we used that weapon to score the winning goal on a perfectly timed play with Hassoun.

Evan Bush
On the game…

The game got a little choppy, but at the same time, we were able to deal with that. We didn’t’ get frustrated by it, played the game the way we needed to and scored a goal to win the game. We saw that our depth play an important role in this game tonight. Bernardello was fantastic tonight, but also guys like Warner who was good in the middle.

For the confidence of the team…

For this tournament, it helps build confidence to get the first win against a good team in your group. But it also lifts the team’s morale going into the game against a good team in Chicago. We are coming off of a deflating loss this past weekend, and this will help give us some confidence.

Patrice Bernier
On the win…

You want to win your first game at home starting the group stage in this tournament, so it was a good start for us and will bring us some good momentum moving forward.

On Bernardello’s debut…

He played a good game, He’s very comfortable on the ball and we saw exactly what people said about him and his play. He is very hungry to win the ball and has good vision and covers a lot of ground. We had some good chemistry when I got on the pitch and if we can build on that, it will be a good thing.
