Didier Drogba added to myth in first Montreal start

Perfect moments in sports are extremely rare, often reserved for dramatic depictions in movies. Truth is, careers don’t always end with wins, you won’t always get that stoppage time goal, and not everyone scores on their first start with their new club.

But then again, not everyone is Didier Drogba.

The normal set of rules don’t tend to apply for people like Didier Drogba. With legend status attained far before the Ivorian striker landed in Montreal to a roaring crowd at the airport, Drogba had the mammoth task of living up to this godly image Montreal’s supporters had of him, something easier said than done.

But then, in his first start, he scored the game’s opening goal, in the 27th minute. Not only did he live up to expectations, but his first goal left Stade Saputo thirsty for more, as it was taken in classic Drogba style. With a cross coming in from the right, Drogba easily outmuscled his defender, leaving him in the dust before slotting it past the goalkeeper with ease. Watch the clip. The defender didn’t stand a chance, still lying on the floor as Drogba raced to the corner flag to celebrate.

The King had arrived, and now everyone knew it.

Then, with Chicago up 3-2 with half an hour to play, the unthinkable: Drogba would not only score the equalizer, but the winning goal as well three minutes later, sending the crowd into a frenzy. As far as MLS debuts go, you can’t get much better, and yes, I’m talking to you Zlatan.

Impact 4, Chicago 3, thanks to a Didier Drogba hat-trick, in one of the most memorable games at Stade Saputo. Luckily, you’ll be able to relive the entire thing tonight at 7:30pm on impactmontreal.com.

Tonight, the king returns.
