International watch

Following our players with their national teams

It’s been an extremely busy international break for a lot of CF Montréal players joining their international teams abroad.

Robert Thorkelsson, Iceland U21

Our young defender Robert Thorkelsson earned a call-up with Iceland’s U21 side during the break, featuring in all three games his team played.

The Icelandic side kicked off the window with a dominant 9-0 win over Liechtenstein U21, followed by a 3-1 win over Belarus, before finally finishing the window in style with 5-0 win against Cyprus.

Romell Quioto, Honduras

Our striker is a regular in the Honduran national team, and he showed us why during this window. The Honduran started all three games his country played, scoring once against Curacao in a 2-1 loss and earning an important assist in his country’ 2-1 win over Canada.

Samuel Piette, Alistair Johnston, and Kamal Miller, Canada

The World Cup bound Canadian national team played two games during the break, both friendlies, to further prepare for their first appearance at the World Cup since 1986. With three CF Montréal players on the roster, the Montreal side continues to be well represented internationally.

Both Kamal Miller and Alistair Johnston were on the starting 11 for both games the Reds played, against Curacao and Honduras, while Samuel Piette appeared as a substitute against Curacao.

Djordje Mihailovic, United States

In a stroke of bad luck, Djordje was unable to join the American national team due to an injury suffered in our last game before the international break.

The 23-year-old was set to return to the national team after having attended the team’s training camp in January. He made his debut with the senior team on Jan. 27, 2019 against Panama, scoring the team's first goal in a 3-0 victory.

Ahmed Hamdi, Egypt

Midfielder Ahmed Hamdi joined the Egypitan national team during the current window for some important gamwes. Egypt played qualifying matches for the African Cup of Nations, on June 5th against Guinea, in Cairo, then on June 9th against Ethiopia – a game to be played in Malawi. Egypt won their first game 1-0 and lost the second 2-0, with Ahmed on the bench for both games.

The Pharaohs also took on South Korea in an international friendly, with Ahmed Hamdi starting this one and earning 87 minutes of playing time in a 4-1 loss.

Rida Zouhir, Keesean Ferdinand, Loïc Cloutier and Mael Henry, Canada U20

CF Montréal players Loïc Cloutier, Keesean Ferdinand, Maël Henry and Rida Zouhir have been selected by Canada's national U-20 team to participate in the 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship, scheduled to take place from June 18 to July 3, in Honduras.

The Concacaf Men's U-20 Championship will determine the confederation's four representatives at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia, as well as the region’s two representatives at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Lassi Lappalainen, Finland

Midfielder Lassi Lappalainen joined the Finland national team for four UEFA Nations League group stage matches. Lappalainen was on the bench for the first one against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Finland was placed in Group B3 of the UEFA Nations League. The team atop the table at the end of the group stage will secure promotion to League A while the bottom team will be relegated to League C. Following these sets of matches, Finland is currently third.
