Shamit Shome has started nine of last 10 games for Impact
It’s been quite a year for Shamit Shome. The Canadian midfielder burst onto the scene in 2019 for the Impact, making 12 starts already this year, including nine of the last 10 games. He’s added a goal and an assist as well and has impressed supporters with his smooth transition from defense to offense.
In recent games, Shome has shown another aspect of his game that head coach Rémi Garde has found extremely useful, especially considering the injuries and international departures the man in charge had to deal with: his adaptability.
“He’s a Swiss knife,” said head coach Rémi Garde. “I can put him on the left, the right, forward, behind; he’s the typical profile of a player that gives everything to his team. His selflessness is remarkable. He’s constantly listening since I’ve started working with him. He has a desire to progress and he grasps things quickly. He is progressing, and he must continue progressing. Once a player starts performing well and people start noticing, the pressure becomes different. But his attitude at training hasn’t changed and he’s continuing to grow.”
Shome is happy with where he is today; after being drafted in the beginning of 2017, the former FC Edmonton didn’t see any action that year until the final game, when he was subbed on late in the second half. That was followed by a handful of games and just two starts the following year.
Shome finally got his shot in 2019 and needless to say, he hasn’t looked back since.
“I’ve progressed a lot, and I’m proud to say it,” said midfielder Shamit Shome. “When I think of my first game against Sporting Kansas City up to now, I’ve grown a lot and it’s good. But there’s still a lot more I could do. I want to get more goals and assists. I need to help the team win more. At the end of the day, I’m happy with my own progress, but it’s about the team now and how I can help it win. We’re doing well so far. We just need to keep it up.”
