The Designated Player spent a season and a half in Montreal

One of the greats from the modern game, Didier Drogba, officially announced his retirement from professional soccer. Admirers of the beautiful game around the world will be saddened to see the Ivorian legend hang up his boots, a particularly poignant moment for Bleu-blanc-noir supporters.

Drogba joined the Impact midway through the 2015 season, crashing into MLS with 11 goals in nine games started, notching another one in the playoffs as well. The following season, Drogba put up 10 goals and six assists in 22 games, helping the club reach the Eastern Conference final for the first time in its history.

On behalf of everyone here at the Montreal Impact, happy retirement, King Drogba. And as it’s Thursday, let’s throw it back to his arrival in Montreal in 2015.
