A deserved first MLS goal for Shamit Shome

Midfielder scored game-winner against New England

Wednesday’s win against New England was special for more than a few reasons for the Montreal Impact. First off, it marked the club’s third win away from home, equaling last year’s point total on the road with less than half the games played, having added two draws as well.

But one of the game’s highlights came in the 79th minute, when Shamit Shome rushed the goalkeeper after Cody Cropper fumbled the ball, netting his first MLS goal and breaking the deadlock.

The Impact would score two more to end the game, en route to a dominant 3-0 win.

“It felt good,” said Shome after the game. “It doesn’t get much easier than that, but I’m really happy to get it out of the way. I’m going to keep building on that confidence and keep pushing to try and help the team more with goals and assists. That’s what we need to do as midfielders, contribute offensively to the team.”

Shome scored his first goal in just his fifth start with the Impact, after being chosen 41st overall by the club in the 2017 SuperDraft. Throughout the game, the midfielder was comfortable in possession, rarely making mistakes while posing an offensive threat, finishing the game with
two shots on target and three chances created.

“He played a good game,” said Impact head coach Rémi Garde. “Shamit is a player who’s progressed, and who is still progressing. We’ve been working with him for almost 18 months now. He’s a very attentive player, with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to apply what he learns. He also had a very good game against D.C. United.”

The team as a whole was dominant, Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium, not allowing the Revs any shot on target. Rémi Garde’s men will now play two consecutive games at home for the first time this season, hoping to keep the attacking momentum going.

“It’s huge for us,” added Shome. “It was a big character-building experience for us, and I think it’ll bring us all closer together as well, which is great. It was a very hard 24 hours for us, and we got through it together, and it showed on the field. We all played as a team and there was no individuality. We’re all really happy to get out of there with three points.”
