Head coach Rémi Garde comments on the team’s captaincy on Tuesday
When former captain Patrice Bernier announced his retirement at the end of the 2017 season, the Montreal Impact saw a page of its history turn. Before training on Tuesday, Montreal Impact head coach Rémi Garde commented on the team’s captaincy before the beginning of the 2018 season on Sunday.
“I have the intention of simply sharing the responsibilities,” explained Garde. “From experience, I find that players are not always comfortable wearing the armband for an entire season in the dressing room. It can happen, some people have it in them. While discussing with the players, I realized that what I wanted to suggest was quite well perceived, so the responsibilities will be shared between the players. Not all of them, just a few. But ideally, I would love to have 11 captains on the field.”
The team will play two games on the road to start the season, in Vancouver on March 4 and Columbus on March 10, before playing its home opener on March 17 against its biggest rival, Toronto FC.
