Playoffs looking good with four games remaining
There’s really no other way to put it: Saturday’s win over Inter Miami FC was simply huge for the Impact. With the Florida representatives in a position to hop over the Impact in the standings with a win, Thierry Henry’s men remained resilient, notching a late winner and increasing that gap in the standings to five points.
With just four games left in the season, this may prove to be the most important result yet for the Montreal side.
Those three points put the Impact in a favourable position. Here are few scenarios in which the Impact can qualify to the post-season tournament sooner rather than later.
If the Impact wins three of its last four games, they’ll secure a playoff spot no matter what, giving the team 32 points and 10 wins, meaning they’ll finish no worse than ninth in the standings, with trailing teams like DC United, Cincinnati, Miami, Atlanta, and Chicago unable to catch up.
If the Impact wins two of its last remaining games, their playoff berth will almost be complete, barring these two happenings: Miami wins all of its four remaining games, or Atlanta wins its four remaining games. Note that three wins and a tie wouldn’t be enough. With the Impact at 29 points and nine wins in this scenario, DC United and Cincinnati would not be able to finish above the Impact.
The race to the playoffs continues this Saturday at 7pm against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium.
