Following his selection in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft (8th pick overall), Impact Media spoke to midfielder Blake Smith. The 22 year-old has been on the Impact radar for a while and Director of Soccer Operations Matt Jordan was happy to add him to the roster.
How did you feel when you heard your name called?
I was watching the draft, hoping to hear my name called. When it popped up, it was exciting to see that all my hard work had finally paid off and I’m really excited to get to Montreal and kick things off.
Q: What type of player are you?
I am a midfielder who likes to bring some excitement to the game. I am quick and I like to take on the defender on the left side to find a pass or a cross if possible, but I can take the shot if it presents itself to me. I’m also a good one v. one defender and I could provide some options for the coaching staff on the left side, in the middle or as a withdrawn striker. I can play anywhere on the left side.
What do you know about Montreal?
To be honest, not that much, but my cousin told me it’s a beautiful place and I’m excited to get up there and get to know the city and the supporters.
Did you meet with management prior to the draft and what were your first impressions?
Yes at the Combine, they all seem really nice quite passionate about the game. I am excited to see how that translates to the field, the team and play in MLS. I am really excited to get going.
How do you feel about playing across the border?
A: Obviously it’ll be a bit of an adjustment, but that is a part of being in professional sports. You have to be open-minded and professional about these things. I knew that wherever I was going to go, I was going to work hard and make the best of the situation. People would be really happy to be in my shoes, and I appreciate that.
Q: What are your thoughts about the team and its veterans?
Obviously it’s very exciting to be on the same pitch as guys like Nesta and Di Vaio. It will be an awesome feeling and I plan to learn as much as I can from them, work hard and hopefully help make a difference for the team in the near future.
