The Bleu-blanc-noir’s next game will be against a team that just made a prestigious signing.
Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, a world champion in 2014 with Germany and European champion with FC Bayern in 2012-13, chose Chicago Fire as his next destination, after his youth club and Manchester United.
And what a coincidence! The Impact will be at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois, on April 1 to take on the Fire (3pm -- TVA Sports, CTV, 985sports.ca & TSN Radio 690). The Bleu-blanc-noir players were thus more than happy to comment on the signing after Tuesday’s training session.
“This is a player who’s won everything,” said team captain Patrice Bernier. “His resume is impressive. They’ve already got Dax McCarty and Juninho, so perhaps they had some more pressing needs, but the Fire does what it needs to do. We’ll focus on ourselves and make sure that we put a good team on the field.”
“I think it’s an awesome move,” added goalkeeper Evan Bush. “Any time you can get a name like him, that’s really cool. The interesting part is where he’s going to fit for them. I’m not sure if any of those three midfielders are necessarily No. 10s, but they obviously have a plan for him, otherwise they wouldn’t have spent money on him.”
Schweinsteiger, who has tallied 70 goals in 535 career games, recently struggled with a muscle injury. But he did return to light training with United last week and could, in theory, face the Impact on April 1 if the required documents for his transfer have been processed.
In any case, this game is bound to be quite the event for Fire supporters.
