During a conference call with media Friday, the Impact’s new striker Jack McInerney answered a number of questions about his move, his new city and his future.
Were you surprised by the trade?
Jack McInerney: Actually, yes I was surprised. I came in this morning like any other day, ready to get to work and John Hackworth pulled me aside to tell me about the trade. I was a little surprised at first, but now I’m excited about getting out there to play.
Feelings on working with Marco Di Vaio?
JM: I’m excited to come and be under his wing. I think he is one of the best finishers MLS has ever had. If we play next to each other, it’ll be a dream comes true. I met him at the All-Star game last year, and he’s a great guy, so I’m looking forward to learning all I can from him. We are pretty similar players in style. He showed his quality last weekend in Philadelphia.
Do you think you have anything to prove to your new team and the league?
JM: With Philly shipping me on, it’s kind of disappointing, but makes me want to prove myself even more. It’s a fresh start with new teammates and coaches and I want to not only prove myself to my new team and new fans, but the entire league.
Will this fresh start help you round out into form?
JM: I think it will. It hasn’t been the best start to the year. My confidence is high and I feel I’ve had a pretty good season so far, so I’m looking forward to scoring goals for the Impact.
What have you heard about Montreal?
JM: I’ve been there for games and it’s a beautiful city. It’s a little cold, but I can get used to that. It’s a very European city, so may be a culture shock at first, but I’m excited because I’ve heard the fans are great with the players and so is the club.
What changed for you towards the end of last season, when scoring was a little tougher?
JM: At the beginning, I came into the year with one full season under my belt. My confidence was high, and then I got called into the national team (for the Gold Cup) and was out of the group for a month, and I had trouble finding my form.
