PLAYOFF RESULTS

San Jose, Colorado, Dallas and Los Angeles have all reached the second round of the playoffs in Major League Soccer. In the Eastern Conference, the San Jose Earthquakes won against the New York Red Bulls 3-2 on aggregate goals, following a 3-1 win, Thursday, in New York. The Colorado Rapids defeated the Columbus Crew 5-4 in penalty kicks, Saturday, after a 2-2 tie on aggregates. In the Western Conference, FC Dallas beat the 2009 defending champions Real Salt Lake by a 3-2 score, while two assists from David Beckham led the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 2-1 victory, Sunday in Seattle, to beat the Sounders 3-1 on aggregate goals.

OLAVE, SABORIO, CONVEY AND HYNDMAN HONORED

Center back Jamison Olave has been named the MLS Defender of the Year, after helping Real Salt Lake to establish a new league record with only 20 goals conceded during the regular season. His teammate, striker Alvaro Saborio, was chosen the MLS Newcomer of the Year. Signed in March, he scored a team-high 12 goals this season and added four assists in 23 starts for the club. San Jose veteran midfielder Bobby Convey was named the MLS Comeback Player of the Year on Wednesday. Following a knee injury two years ago, Convey tallied 10 assists in a career-high 28 games this season. FC Dallas head coach Schella Hyndman was named Thursday the 2010 Coach of the Year following a 19-game unbeaten streak and a first postseason berth since 2007.

TAN AND STEWART JOIN THE WHITECAPS

Forward Long Tan and midfielder Cornelius Stewart have joined the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, which is currently taking part in a six-week training camp. Tan was acquired when midfielders Ricardo Sanchez and Jonathan Steele were sent to the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Stewart is back with the team after spending the last two months with St. Vincent and the Grenadines national team.



MITCHELL AND VALENTINE AS GUEST COACHES

Former Whitecaps players Dale Mitchell and Carl Valentine have also joined the Whitecaps coaching staff as guest coaches for the remainder of the training camp. Mitchell will primarily work with the strikers, while Valentine will pass on his experience to the midfielders.
