For a second consecutive year, the Montreal Impact won the Mauro Biello Tournament.
Organised by the Impact Academy, the fifth edition of the tournament gathered the best clubs from across the province and a selection from Nova Scotia.
The tournament started Saturday with the group phase. In group A, the Montreal Impact was matched with Nova Scotia, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and CS Mont-Royal Outremont. In group B: the Caravelles de Sainte-Foy, Hull, FSS Salaberry and CS Longueuil faced off.
At the end of the day, the Impact finished second in its group, with six points after two wins against Nova Scotia and NDG and a loss to CS Mont-Royal Outremont. The only team to win all its group games was FSS Salaberry, standing at the top of group B.
In the quarterfinals, the Bleu-blanc-noir won in penalties against the Caravelles de Sainte-Foy to get a spot in the semifinals.
“It was a good tournament for us overall,” said U13 Impact head coach Serge Dinkota. “We started the first day on a good note, but didn’t finish it as well. Sunday, we started a bit slower, but the group was steadfast in penalties.”
In the semifinals, the Impact won 2-1 against FSS Salaberry, a team that had been playing well during the whole tournament.
“The semifinal was our best game because of what was at stake, but also because of our high level of tactical discipline,” added Dinkota. “We played a really tight game against an opponent that was probably the strongest of the tournament. We also came back from behind to take the lead.”
The team won the finale 4-2 against CS Longueuil to hold its Mauro Biello Tournament title for a second straight year.
“It was nice to see the first team coaches there to watch us and the president Joey Saputo, who came to congratulate us after the final,” added Dinkota. “The good performance of the players proved that we made the right choices. The tournament is an important event for us as it gathered the best clubs across the province. It was a good level of play.”
Overall, the tournament was a success and gave the chance to participating teams to faceoff in a high level of competition.
