The Montreal Impact U23 team kicked off its Quebec University championship last Sunday, with a 2-1 victory on the road against the University of Sherbrooke.

Charles Joly and Anthony Jackson-Hamel scored for the Impact in its first win of 2014.

The U23s played a solid game defensively, allowing just one shot against, resulting in the only goal off of a free-kick for Sherbrooke.

“We controlled the game well while respecting our principles,” noted U23 head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. “We performed well against a good opponent, who played with a lot of intensity. It’s always nice to see how the group progresses. We were able to play a number of guys and are satisfied with the performance overall.”

Goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu, who has taken part in some training sessions with the first team this week, manned the goal for the Impact and he is expected to get the start again this Sunday at 6pm, against McGill University, at the Marie-Victorin Sports Complex.

“After a lighter workload this week, we look to have another solid effort like last weekend against McGill,” added Eullaffroy.

Defender Amine Meftouh, midfielder Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé and forward Victor Ndiaye will not be available for the game as they are taking part in training camp with the pros on a full time basis.

Chris-Michel Rumuri, who is still rehabbing from a knee injury suffered last April, is expected to return to the field with his teammates at the end of February.

Sunday night’s game is open to the public, free of charge.

Following the University championships, the Impact U23 will play some exhibition games in the U.S., starting in April, in preparation for the PDL season.
