Impact to play an exhibition game in Trois-Rivières

The re-match against the Impact will give Sélect players a chance to avenge last year’s loss — 3-0 in front of 2,748 fans, March 15, 2005 — but it will also be an occasion for soccer fans to see the 2006 edition of the Montreal squad, which has several new players this year, including Brazilian striker Mauricio Salles, who was third in scoring in the United Soccer Leagues First Division last season, and midfielder Leonardo Di Lorenzo, who has played with first-division teams in Argentina. The Impact won the USL D1 championship in 2004, and the regular-season title in 2005.

Soccer fans from the Mauricie area will also have a chance to see the best female soccer players in the province of Quebec, as the Laval Comètes, a W-League expansion team, will face the Québec Dynamo preceding the men’s match-up.

The Comètes, who have joined the W-League, the highest level of women’s soccer in North America, will be facing the Québec Dynamo AAA senior women’s team. Among the Comètes’ stars are Isabelle Morneau and Amy Walsh, who have both played for the Canadian women’s national team.

Tickets for the full day of high-level soccer are on sale for $10 during the Coupe Trifluvienne de soccer intérieur, in the Plante Sports Excellence and Carte Étoile boutiques. Also the seven Uniprix stores in the area will draw some tickets for the customers. Each spectator will also receive a free ticket for an Impact regular-season game in Montreal.

The event’s organizing committee is comprised of representatives from the Club de soccer Albatros de Trois-Rivières-Ouest, Club de soccer Juvénile du Cap-de-la-Madeleine, L’Association trifluvienne de soccer and Sélect de Trois-Rivières. They have come together to form a regional partnership whose goal is to present prestigious soccer events in the Trois-Rivières area.

The Impact will play its first regular-season game on Sunday, April 23 at 4 pm in Miami. Montreal’s 13th home opener in club history at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex will take place Sunday, May 21 at 4 pm against the Minnesota Thunder.

The Comètes will play their W-League season opener on Saturday, May 20 at 7 pm at Laval’s Bois-de-Boulogne Sports Complex, against the Hamilton Avalanche.
