SUMMARY
The Sounders opened the scoring at the 17th minute when defender Scott Jenkins redirected a corner from Leighton O’Brien to the right of Impact goalkeeper Andrew Olivieri. It was Olivieri’s first start with the Impact since July 6 and his first loss in four games.
Already guaranteed to clinch first place overall and a bye into the semi-final round, Impact head coach Nick De Santis opted to rest many of his regular starters for the game. Goalkeeper Greg Sutton, defenders Gabriel Gervais, Adam Braz and Mauricio Vincello, midfielder Patrick Leduc and forward Mauro Biello did not start the match.
The Sounders had their first scoring opportunity at the 14th minute when defender Ryan Edwards took advantage of a loose ball and hit the crossbar with a header. Seattle hit the cross bar two other times in the first half, on shots by Mikael Galindo (25th) and Gabe Sturm (45th), so as O’Brien in the 51st minute.
The Sounders dominated the Impact 21 shots to 10.
In the 34th minute, midfielder Masahiro Fukasawa also stopped a hard shot from C.J. Klaas right on the goal line.
The Impact’s stretch without allowing a goal ended at 404 minutes.
The Impact now has a lifetime record of 5-12-1 against the Sounders.
The Impact will wrap up the 2005 regular season Sunday night, against the Whitecaps in Vancouver (7 pm). Montreal will then play its semi-final round games September 23 and 25.
