The Impact began its run through the knockout stage of the Champions League talking about making history, and the longer the run goes, the more chapters are being written for both IMFC and MLS.
The latest chapter starts with the Bleu-blanc-noir becoming just the second MLS team ever to win a game in the semifinals of the Champions League, with its 2-0 victory over Alajuelense. Real Salt Lake managed the feat in 2011 on its way to the finals.
Since the Champions League format was adopted by CONCACAF in 2008-2009 (currently in its 7th edition), Major League Soccer teams have made 14 appearances in the knockout stages of the CONCACAF Champions League, with only five ever qualifying for the final four of the tournament.
Aside from IMFC and RSL, the LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders in 2012-2013 as well as Toronto FC in 2011-2012 are the only other MLS teams to make it to the semis.
To demonstrate just how difficult this tournament is, five time MLS Cup Champions and the most storied club in MLS, the LA Galaxy, have the most appearances for any MLS side in the knockout phase with three, making the semis just once.
The IMFC next page will be written this Tuesday against Alajuelense in his hostile stadium in Costa Rica at 10pm ET (TVA Sports, Sportsnet, TSN Radio 690).
