Originally from Clacton-on-Sea, in England, Westlake was formed by club Ipswich Town and began his professional career in 2002. Westlake has played 125 games with Ipswich in second division, including three FA Cup games and three League Cup games, scoring a total of 17 goals.
In August 2006, Westlake was sold to Leeds United where he played 47 games with Leeds, in second and third division, and was part of the club from 2006 to 2009.
“He has played at a very good level in England,” said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis. “He has the profile we were looking for. He has showed good things during training in the past 10 days and had a great attitude. We think that he can help our team going forward.”
“Westlake is a dynamic left-footed midfielder who can play wide left or in the middle,” added De Santis. “He likes to get forward and has good quality with his left foot. We are also adding to the roster a player with a good age who has a certain experience. Now he needs to play to get his game fitness back and we hope that it won't take too much time for him to adapt.”
A former U21 England team player, Westlake also suited up for English clubs Brighton & Hove Albion, Cheltenham Town, Oldham Athletic, and most recently with the Wycombe Wanderers, from 2009 to 2011.
Westlake becomes the fifth foreign player on the roster, joining French players Philippe Billy, Hassoun Camara and Anthony Le Gall, as well as Senegalese forward Mignane Diouf.
Westlake, who was on trial with the club since July 5, might be available for Sunday’s game at Saputo Stadium against the Atlanta Silverbacks, at 3:30pm (CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990, radio-canada.ca/sports). Tickets for this game are still available through Admission Network (admission.com / 514-790-1245) or at Saputo Stadium’s ticketing office.
