Defender Wesley Charles joins the Impact

“After the departures of Joqueviel and Pesoli, we have been on the lookout for a centre back and Wesley Charles was our best option,” said Impact technical director Nick De Santis. “With Nevio (Pizzolitto) and Hicham (Aaboubou), we now have more depth at that position. Wesley knows the league very well. He is an experienced player who has won a championship. He knows what it takes to win. Right from his first practice with the team, he has had a great attitude and he has been a positive presence. Now his challenge is to demonstrate and prove what he is capable of doing.”

Charles, 34, is originally from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He played with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2008 and 2009, helping the club win the playoff championship in 2008. That same year, he was selected to the league’s second all-star team. Prior to his stint with Vancouver, he played over 10 years and 250 games in Ireland’s first division with the Slido Rovers, the Bray Wanderers and with Galway United.

Internationally, Charles played over 90 games with the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines national team, most notably in qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup.

Charles will be available for Wednesday’s game against St. Louis AC, at Saputo Stadium. Fans in attendance for games on Wednesdays July 21, 28, and August 11, are invited to take advantage of $1 Lafleur hotdogs from the opening of the gates (6pm) until kickoff. Tickets for those matches are available through the Admission Network (514-790-1245 / 1-800-361-4595 / admission.com) as well as at the Saputo Stadium ticket office.
