MONTREAL – The CF Montréal reserve team will play its third season in Ligue 1 Québec in 2024. The regular season will run from April 20 to September 7.
Nine home games will be played at Centre Nutrilait free of charge. After its opening match in Town of Mount Royal on Sunday April 21, the squad will play its first home game on Saturday April 27 against Celtix du Haut-Richelieu.
With a group of 22 players aged between 17 and 20, head coach Patrick Viollat and his assistant Sylvain Hascoët will be able to rely on key players such as goalkeeper Judewellin Michel, recently called up this winter during the first team's training camp, and U17 Canadian internationals Étienne Godin, Gaël De Montigny and Antoine N’Diaye.
Three new players were added to the roster: goalkeeper Alessandro Ouzounis, defender Nicolas Pietrantonio and forward Nael Kane. Seven players will play their third season in the Quebec league. Among a group with nine different nationalities, eighteen are from Quebec and six from Montreal.
"The Academy's primary goal is to promote its players to the first team," said head coach Patrick Viollat. "The aim is for our players to be showcased this season in order to be called up regularly to trainings with the first team. As was the case in winter 2023, the group faced some very good teams during this past winter season and is assimilating the Academy's style of play in line with that of the first team. We're better organized collectively and individually, so it will be interesting to gauge our progress for this new season in Ligue1 Québec, where we'll want to perform well and make a bigger impact than last year."
The reserve team's preparations began in January at Complexe sportif Mare-Victorin and included matches against Quebec and American university teams as well as MLS NEXT PRO teams (New England Revolution II, New York Red Bulls II, New York City FC II and Toronto FC II).
"We are very excited to start this third season among the elite of Quebec soccer," said Academy Director Marinos Papageorgopoulos. "We have a group of young players with a lot of potential and we are eager to see them develop further during this competition which is the best in the province. The experience they gain will be essential in their journey towards a professional career and ultimately to join the first team."
Ligue1 Québec is the province's semi-professional league, equivalent to the third division at the national level. In 2023, CF Montréal finished fifth in the standings, near a playoff spot with a 12-6-4 record.
