Canada-Quebec starts the Jeux de la Francophonie with a win

Canada-Congo 1

The Canada-Quebec selection started the Jeux de la Francophonie with a positive result, winning 1-0 against the Democratic Republic of Congo Saturday, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Impact U18 forward Gabriel Balbinotti scored the winning goal while James Pantemis got the clean sheet with two key saves.

For Thomas Meilleur-Giguère, Ottawa Fury FC defender and team captain, and his teammates in defence, it’s the third clean sheet in a row, including the preparation camp.

“The game went well for us,” said the club’s first team midfielder Shamit Shome. “We controlled the play for most of the first half and created a lot of chances and defended well. In the second half, Congo put a lot of pressure, but defensively, we were solid and were able to hold our own and win. The guys are confident heading into the next match against France, as it could be the deciding game for who makes it to the semifinals.”

Canada-Quebec will face France this Monday, July 24.
