MONTREAL Quebec – A goal by defender Kai Morton lifted the Impact U21 (13-3-5) to a 1-0 victory over SC Toronto (14-4-4) Sunday afternoon at the Outremont Recreation Centre. The win brings the team’s winning streak to eight games.
Morton scored the game winner in the 29th minute, beating two defenders in the air to head the ball past the goalkeeper from a corner kick.
Impact goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu earned the shutout. He made a key stop in the game’s final minutes, helping his side win its final home game of the season.
The two squads finished the game with 10-men, following ejections for both. An SC Toronto defender was shown a red card for a violent tackle on Maxim Tissot. Then, Impact midfielder Wandrille Lefevre was also ejected following a second yellow in the 78th minute.
“This game can be broken down into a one-hour soccer game and 30 minutes of kick around,” said Impact U21 head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. “In terms of the quality of play, it was average, but in terms of the overall result, we are pleased to have won an eighth game in a row against an opponent that is in second place in the standings.”
Next game
The Impact U21s could jump into second place in the CSL with a win in its final game, this Wednesday, at Downsview Park at 8pm (ET) against TFC Academy.
“The win today allows us a chance to take over second spot,” added Eullaffroy. “If we win on Wednesday, we will get home field advantage in the playoffs - all the way to the semi-finals. The best recipe to prepare for the playoffs is to continue our winning ways and maintain the momentum.”
