The next captain: Frank Klopas won’t rush his decision

As training camp opens, a number of questions still have to be answered prior to the start of the 2014 MLS season, including who will be the Impact’s next captain.

Davy Arnaud’s rights were traded to D.C. United prior to the Waiver Draft in December, and with him, the only captain the team has known since joining MLS two seasons ago.

But since such a decision is an important one, Montreal Impact head coach Frank Klopas won’t rush it.

“Obviously your captain has to be a good leader,” said Klopas. “He has to lead both on and off the field. He needs to be composed in tough spots and needs to put the team first before everything else.”

And the former Chicago Fire manager already has a good idea of who some of the leaders are on this team from playing against the Impact over the last two seasons.

“There are guys like Patrice Bernier and Marco Di Vaio who have worn the arm band in the past,” added Klopas. “They are great leaders and are a couple of possibilities, but that decision won’t be made until, at the very least, the first phase of training camp ends and we head to Orlando.”
