MONTREAL – FC Montreal conceded a goal in stoppage time and lost 2-1 to the Wilmington Hammerheads FC Thursday, at Stade Saputo.
The Hammerheads were the first to score when Brian Ackley put a diving header in the back of the net on a cross coming from the left flank in the 39th minute.
The Bleu-blanc-noir replied early in the second half. Midfielder Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé deflected a pass from midfielder Zakaria Messoudi behind the defenders for winger Victor Omar Ndiaye. Ndiaye went around the goalkeeper and scored in the 50th minute.
In stoppage time, Wilmington pushed forward and then Marc Godelman passed back to Will Heaney in the box, whose low shot went right corner to beat goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau in the 91st minute.
"It’s cruel. I think we deserved better," said FC Montreal head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. "We can only be disappointed when we played a good game on the whole."
“It’s really disappointing since I think we played a good game,” said defender Mélé Temguia. “It might be due to a lack of concentration or fatigue from our side.”
In the 9th minute, FC Montreal had a good opportunity. Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé stopped a clearance from Wilmington, but their keeper blocked his volley shot.
A few minutes later, winger Fabio Morelli lobbed the ball over the keeper after getting a through ball. His shot hit the right post.
FC Montreal will play its next game on Saturday, July 4, at 3pm against Toronto FC II at the Ontario Soccer Centre. The game will be available via streaming at www.impactmontreal.ca/fcmontreal.
