MONTREAL – Montreal Impact midfielders Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé and Louis Béland-Goyette have been selected by the Canadian Men’s U20 National Team to take part in the 2015 CONCACAF Championship in Jamaica, from January 9 to 24.
They both played in three friendlies with the Canada U20s last November, where the Reds fought back twice to salvage a 2-2 draw with England before registering a 2-1 win over Russia’s U-21 team and a 1-0 win over USA.
Gagnon-Laparé has played five games with the senior team, since 2013, including his most recent cap in a friendly against Colombia, last October 15 at Red Bull Arena, in New Jersey. In his first MLS season, the Impact Academy graduate played five games and 270 minutes, including three starts.
Béland-Goyette made his MLS debut last September 13 against the New England Revolution, after signing his first professional contract with the club a day earlier.
Canada is part of Group B alongside Mexico, Honduras, Haiti, Cuba and El Salvador and all games will be played in Montego Bay. The team will start the tournament against Haiti on January 10, followed by Mexico two days later. Matches against El Salvador (January 15), Cuba (January 19) and Honduras (January 22) will conclude the group stage.
The 12 teams participating in the tournament will look to grab one of the four available spots for the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup, in New Zealand. The group winner moves to the tournament final with a FIFA U-20 World Cup spot secured, while the second and third placed teams will playoff against the second and third placed teams from Group A for the other two spots open to the CONCACAF region.
